The prefecture of Rethymno is located on the western side of Crete, between the prefectures of Chania and Heraklion. It is full of magnificent beaches, interesting archaeological sites, Byzantine churches, lovely villages and lively resorts.
Rethymnon Town is the capital, a town with intense Medieval architecture and a lovely Venetian port. Bali, Agia Galini, Plakias and Adelianos Kampos are among the most popular beach resorts in Rethymno Greece, while a drive around will bring you to innumerable secluded coves for total privacy.
Interesting sights to visit in the region are the historical Monasteries of Preveli and Arkadi, the Ideon Cave where god Zeus was raised according to mythology and the many gorges in the inland.
The westernmost side of Crete, Chania is a wonderful place for vacations.
The Town is a romantic place to stroll around, with Medieval architecture, elegant mansions and a wonderful Venetian port, the most famous spot of the town. In close distance to Chania Town, there are many tourist beaches and hotels.
However, you should not also miss excursions around the region to discover the fabulous spots of Chania: Balos, Elafonissi, Paleochora, Sfakia, Falassarna and Samaria Gorge.
All beaches have crystal water and each one offers a unique experience, from the most tourist to the most secluded beach. The natural beauty of the area is breathtaking.
Located between the prefectures of Rethymno and Lassithi, on the eastern side of Crete, Heraklion is the most popular region of the island.
It hosts many busy places with intense nightlife, including Malia, Hersonissos, Ammoudara and Agia Pelagia, but also many peaceful family places, particularly on the southern side.
As Heraklion Greece was the main field where the Minoan civilization flourished, you should not miss a visit to the Minoan Palaces of Knossos and Phaestos.
A drive around Heraklion in Crete will also bring you to traditional villages, Medieval castles, Byzantine monasteries and nice beach places to relax. This region combines busy resorts and secluded coves.
Located on the eastern side of Crete, Lassithi is the least tourist region of the island.
Although it has some popular places, including Elounda, Sissi, Sitia and Ierapetra, the rest of the region is authentic and away from mass tourism.
The best beach of Lassithi Greece is Vai, an amazing place with an impressive palm forest and crystal water. All the beaches have crystal water and relaxing atmosphere.
Very interesting are also the traditional villages in the Plateau of Lassithi, keeping all the local customs and a calm pace of life.
A drive around will bring you to ancient sites and Medieval Castles, such as the Minoan palace of Zakros and the famous island of Spinalonga.
